Pump Support Platform

Problem

Build a lightweight, corrosion resistant platform that supports a centrifugal pump under high tension with minimal deflection.

Solution

Machined a lightweight, aluminum platform that fulfilled all design requirements. Competing against 30 teams, designed the second lightest platform, while still meeting all specs. I contirbuted to the design and machining of the platform, but was personally responsible for using FEA to determine what platform dimensions would maintain the minimum deflection.

Project Images

The image shows the all the parts we designed or selected. The platform and arms were machined out of AL6061 to balance weight and strength needs. The pins underwent a high shear stress, so a steel alloy (AISI 4140) was selected for its high strength.
